Sierra Pacific windows appear in metro Atlanta mostly in homes built or renovated since the late 1990s, and in the custom market they have taken a growing share. The company mills its own lumber, which means the wood in the window is generally better than the industry average and well worth saving.
Aluminum-clad wood, and where it lets water in
Sierra Pacific’s cladding is a heavy extruded aluminum shell over a solid wood core. It performs well, but like every clad window it concentrates risk at the joints. On the units we see in Atlanta, water enters at the corner mitres of the cladding and at the sill-to-jamb junction, then has no route out. The wood decays from the inside while the exterior still looks sound, which is why these are often caught late.
A clad window that feels soft when pressed at the bottom corner needs looking at, whatever the outside looks like.
Glass, and the coating problem
Sierra Pacific has specified a wide range of low-E and tinted glazing packages, frequently varying between elevations of the same house. Matching the original coating matters here more than with most brands: fit a clear unit next to a tinted one and the difference is visible from the street. We identify the package from the spacer stamp before ordering.
Casement and awning hardware
Hardware is generally sound. Where it fails it is usually because the sash has dropped slightly and put the operator under load it was not designed for — the fix starts with the hinge geometry, not the handle.
Repair versus replacement
These are expensive windows and they are usually in expensive openings, often oversized or ganged into multi-unit assemblies. Replacing one unit in a mulled bank of three is disproportionately difficult and frequently means disturbing the other two. Restoring the wood, re-bedding the cladding and replacing the glass leaves the assembly intact.
If you are not sure what you have
Sierra Pacific units carry an identifying stamp on the spacer bar between the panes, visible from inside. Photograph it and send it over, and we can tell you the vintage and what parts remain available.
