How to Protect Your Windows This Winter
Winter has arrived, and you’re likely to see an increase in your heating bill. Colder temperatures can negatively affect your window siding, and heat can easily escape if your windows aren’t properly protected. Drafty windows are also at risk of being destroyed due to severe weather conditions. The winter in Atlanta is mild, but you deserve to be safe and warm when the temperatures drop.
Here are a few strategies to consider protecting your windows this winter:
Repair the Seals
Your window seals can crack and form gaps as winter progresses, and temperatures get lower. Repair any window seals that are giving you trouble keeping the heat inside the home. The best way to accomplish this is to strip away the pre-existing caulk and apply new caulk. This saves you the time and money of having to fully replace your window while keeping you warm for the winter.
Apply Insulation Film
The insulation film sticks onto your window’s frame and protects against snow, sleet, and rainwater. The film also insulates your home’s temperature. Use the heat from your hair dryer to shrink the film and remove wrinkles. Window insulation kits are available both online and in various hardware stores, and they’re very effective in protecting your windows.
Use Thermal Curtains
Thermal curtains are a great tool to protect against the cold. Any curtains or fabrics can reduce drafts when placed over windows. If you’re able to find curtains with thermal backing, purchase them and apply them to your windows. These are typically available in any size and can be applied to windows, patio doors, and sliding glass doors. Keep in mind that if you’re using thermal curtains, you need to keep them closed while your heat is running.
Use Draft Snakes
Cold air can barely creep through your windowsills, and if you’re having this issue, draft snakes might be your best option. If you can’t afford draft snakes, you can fill up a fabric tube with dry rice as an alternative. Place the draft snake, or tube, on the windowsill. This will insulate the area and keep the heat from inside from escaping.
Apply Foam
If you don’t use a window to look out of or let light in, applying rigid foam can help prevent heat from escaping and cold air from entering. This method is simple, as you just need to use foam to cover the windowpanes. If you want to let light in, you can simply remove the foam from the pane. If you use this strategy, we recommend doing this primarily for your attic and basement windows.
