Kolbe is a smaller Wisconsin manufacturer with a serious following among architects, and its windows show up in metro Atlanta mostly in custom builds and high-end renovations. They are excellent windows. They are also the ones other companies most often decline to repair, because the parts are not on a shelf anywhere.
Why other shops turn these down
Kolbe has revised its hardware repeatedly across the Heritage, Ultra and Classic lines, and discontinued components are genuinely difficult to source. A repair company that works only from catalogue parts will look at a twenty-year-old Kolbe casement, find nothing to order, and tell the homeowner the unit needs replacing. That is a statement about the supplier, not about the window.
What we do instead
We fabricate. Sash stops, parting beads, glazing stops and sill nosings are all millable from matching stock. Hardware that cannot be bought can often be rebuilt, re-bushed or cross-matched from another manufacturer’s line with minor modification. Where the original finish is unavailable we match it rather than approximate it.
Common Kolbe failures in Georgia
Seal failure in the glass. Kolbe’s insulated units are frequently oversized or shaped, and they are worth templating precisely rather than guessing.
Finish breakdown on interior wood. Kolbe ships a great deal of unclad and lightly finished pine and fir. In a humid climate an interior finish that has worn through lets the wood move, and the sash starts binding in the frame within a couple of seasons.
Sill and brickmould rot. Same story as every wood window in Atlanta, and the same fix: cut back to sound material, rebuild in epoxy, reprime and repaint.
Before you accept a replacement quote
If you have been told your Kolbe windows cannot be repaired, send us photographs of the sash, the hardware and any stamp in the jamb. In most cases we can tell you from pictures whether the window is restorable, and it usually is.
