Pella windows turn up across metro Atlanta in two very different vintages: ProLine units in subdivisions built from the late 1980s through the 2000s, and Architect and Designer Series windows in custom and renovated homes. They fail in different ways and they repair differently.
The between-the-glass blinds
Pella’s signature feature is also its most common service call. The blinds and shades sealed inside the glass unit are operated by a magnetic or cord mechanism that wears, slips, or stops raising one side. On most Designer Series units the panel is removable and the mechanism can be serviced or swapped without replacing the sash. When the glass itself has fogged, the whole insulated panel — blind included — is the part that gets replaced, which is why a fogged Pella with blinds costs more to repair than a plain fogged unit.
Casement operators and hinges
Pella casements use a geared operator that carries the full weight of the sash on a hinge arm. In Atlanta the failure is usually corrosion at the hinge track after years of humidity, followed by a stripped gearbox as the operator fights a sash that no longer swings freely. Replacing the operator without addressing the track guarantees a repeat visit.
ProLine sill rot
ProLine was Pella’s builder-grade line, and it is the one we repair most often. The aluminum cladding stops at the sill, and the exposed wood underneath takes direct water. On a ProLine double-hung we typically find rot concentrated in the sill and the bottom few inches of the jambs, with the sash themselves perfectly sound.
Parts, and why the age of the window matters
Pella has changed its hardware repeatedly and does not support every discontinued line. For windows made before roughly 1995 we often fabricate or adapt parts rather than order them. This is worth knowing before anyone tells you a window is unrepairable — unrepairable usually means the original part is unavailable, which is not the same thing.
Glass sizes
Pella insulated units are frequently non-standard dimensions, and a glass shop working from a tape measure will get it wrong. We template from the sash itself.
