Window Restoration Dictionary

If you’re considering window repair or window restoration, the process can be full of jargon and terminology that the layman may not understand. Here’s a vocabulary list to help you the next time you need someone to fix or replace your window.

Types of Windows

To everyday people, a window is just a window, but there are many types of windows out there. It can be difficult to know the difference — even if you have them in your own home. Understanding the different styles can help you better communicate with a professional to determine the services you need.

  • Hung Window: A hung window is a window that slides up and down, with the ability to tilt inside for cleaning purposes.
  • Fixed Window: Also known as a picture window, a fixed window is a window that cannot open. Their purpose is to bring in natural light or provide a good view.
  • Casement Window: A casement window uses hinges to swing open vertically, like a door.
  • Awning Window: Awning windows open on a horizontal hinge, angling upwards from the bottom. They’re named “awning” windows because they resemble outdoor awnings and provide protection even when open.
  • Bay Window: A bay window is a window, or group of windows, extending from the house to create an indoor “bay” area.
  • Slide Window: A Slide window, or a sliding window, is a window that opens like a glass door. One of the windows slides over the other, which allows for good airflow.
  • End-Vent Windows: End-vent windows are small sliding windows installed on either side of a wider window.

Each of these windows must be installed, uninstalled, repaired, cleaned, and upgraded in its own unique way due to their differing designs. If you have any of these windows, now you know what they’re called, and you can better understand what your window repair person means if they mention them by name.

Types of Window Components

Of course, windows are also more than just the sheets of glass themselves, but the surrounding elements. Many window components, such as hinges, frames, and locks, are well known, but here are a few other terms to be familiar with:

  • Window Head and Sill: The window head and sill are the horizontal parts at the top and bottom of a window frame, respectively.
  • Jamb Extension: A jamb extension is an extra material used to fill the extra space in between the window and the frame or jamb, allowing it to fit in properly.
  • Casing: Casing is a decorative molding that helps to fill the gap between the wall and the jamb extension.
  • Window Grilles: A window grille, also known as a window grid, divides a wider window into two smaller planes. These are often decorative.
  • Window Caps: Caps are light aluminum coverings that protect exposed window frame surfaces from the elements, as well as make them look better overall.
  • Cam Locks: A cam lock is a type of heavy-duty lock specific to sliding windows.
  • Cranks: Cranks are opening mechanisms for casement and awning windows.
  • Window Sash: A window sash holds the glass framework in place, making the window secure. Sashes are also the parts that move, allowing the window to open and close.
